28th February 2008 – Council houses Edinburgh birds with help from The Wood Works.
Sparrows in Warriston can look forward to some eco-friendly accommodation from now on, thanks to The Wood Works. Twenty nesting boxes (pictured, opposite) have been supplied to line the route of the cycle path through Warriston Cemetery. The boxes, made from completely recycled materials (including bicycle tyres and spokes!) were produced for the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers on behalf of the Biodiversity team at City of Edinburgh Council.
5th February 2008 - As part of Scottish Environment week Nanette Milne MSP visited The Wood Works.
This year, the theme for Scottish Environment Week is ‘A climate for change: enabling sustainable livelihoods’, with an emphasis on how the government, businesses and the public can promote and facilitate sustainable development.
The Wood Works welcomed the opportunity to actively contribute to the Environment Week by hosting a visit of the Shadow Minister for Environment, Nanette Milne. The visit included a tour of The Wood Works ‘WoodStore’ in Graham Street and a discussion about reusing and recycling wood.
Last year, Milne emphasised the importance of diverting wood from landfill in a Parliamentary motion on wood recycling. It was then that it was pointed out that the government is strongly promoting minimising waste materials, with the eventual aim of a zero-waste society. The Wood Works, together with similar businesses based in Glasgow and Aberdeen, have been mentioned as examples of best practice.
After the visit, Nanette Milne remarked that she was ‘greatly impressed with The Wood Works’:
“The diversity of The Wood Works operations in developing the market for recycled wood in the Edinburgh area is an exciting opportunity which I hope will go from strength to strength”.
Simon Hackin, manager of The Wood Works, added:
“It is very exciting to see the Government’s interest and involvement in reusing and recycling wood. It is a valuable resource and we genuinely don’t like seeing it go to waste. It is extremely important to us to have the support of the Government and local community”.
Wood supplied by The Wood Works exhibits at the Edinburgh College of Art, (ECA).
The Wood Works staff attended the Private Viewing of ECA Centenary Masters of Design 2007 Exhibition, where they viewed the work of John Dennis O’ Leary. John had designed the most beautiful and unique floor level communal seat. Using reclaimed pitch pine and new sycamore, the exhibit was certainly one of the star attractions.
This exhibit and many more inspirational works by the postgraduate students can be seen till the 12th December 2007 Mon-Thurs 10am-5pm / Fri-Sun 10am -5pm at the eca, Lauriston Place.
30th June 2007 - Wood Stock 2007
The idea was to have a 'lazy sunny afternoon' at The Wood Works, listen to live music, have a BBQ and learn more about what The Wood Works do. It rained all day but the spirits were high nevertheless. Live music (thanks to Andy Lang and his friends) was superb, food and drink were great and the rain did not scare the real giant jenga fans. It was a great opportunity to see what we have in stock and what we can offer our customers. Thank you all for visiting and participating in Wood Stock 2007!
If you would like to visit the WoodStore again to have a look at our recent rescues and you haven't got the time during the week, we are also open on Saturdays bewteen 10am and 1pm.
13th June 2007 - The Wood Works official launch
The company celebrated their official launch on Wednesday 13th June at their premises in Graham Street. The event generated a lot of interest, with attendees coming from the City of Edinburgh Council, Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), various other waste awareness and recycling organisations, Green Party representatives as well as construction companies and architects.
Councillor Tom Buchanan made the opening speech emphasising the importance of promoting more sustainable ways of managing waste and praising businesses like The Wood Works, which make the best use and reuse of our natural resources. After the speech, it was time to cut the ribbon, which was in fact made of wood (recycled, of course) and sawn through by Councillor Buchanan.
After the official part of the event, there was time to network and have a look round the WoodStore, which is a real DIY haven, with lots of different kinds of wood and products (from floorboards, through pallet wood, reclaimed joists and beams, to tea boxes, doors and even church pews).
Simon Hackin, Business Manager of The Wood Works, was delighted with the turn-out and the participants’ interest in wood recycling: “People genuinely don’t like seeing wood going to waste and we respond to it by recycling this valuable resource”.
